US Steel Imports Hit 15-Month Record; Domestic Demand Takes the Market’s Pulse

The latest data published by Mysteel Global shows that the US steel market reached its highest level since June 2025 in August 2026, registering a record 2.21 million tons of imports.

This 7.2% jump compared to the previous month and significant 29.8% year-on-year growth is evidence of the resilience of US consumer demand, which has been forced to utilize import capacities due to high domestic prices and supply constraints.

Market analysts believe that the persistence of high steel prices within the US and the inability of domestic producers to meet increasing demand have driven traders toward foreign markets. Reports indicate that distributors are grappling with a “supply tightness” environment and have turned to foreign purchases to meet robust market demand.

Breakdown of the Import Basket; Surge in Flat Products

A detailed examination of the statistics shows that flat products have played the main role in this import growth:

Hot-rolled coil: With a remarkable 63.5% growth, it has been one of the main imported items.

Semi-finished products (slab, billet, and bloom): With 14.9% growth, they still constitute the main volume of the import basket at 732,000 tons.

Construction products and pipe: In contrast, products such as OCTG pipes and rebar have faced a noticeable decline in import volumes, indicating buyers’ prioritization of downstream sheet-consuming industries.

Shifts in the Supplier Map

In the import origins sector, significant developments are visible. Brazil, Mexico, and India managed to significantly increase their shares in the US market (Brazil with 38.8% and India with 59.2% growth). In contrast, players such as South Korea, China, and Australia have experienced notable declines in exports to the US market, which could be due to changes in US trade and tariff policies.
