Localization of Heavy-Duty Mining Tire Recycling Technology in Iran
A joint effort between the Mining Research Institute of Isfahan University of Technology and the Iranian Minerals Production and Supply Company (IMPASCO) to localize heavy-duty mining tire recycling technology was featured in an episode of the documentary series “Thinking of the Peak”.
One of the most important challenges facing the mining and mineral industries is moving toward sustainable development and reducing the environmental impacts of mining activities. In this context, recycling and returning waste generated from mining operations back into the consumption cycle have become major innovation priorities in mines around the world.
In line with this trend, the documentary “Thinking of the Peak”, broadcast on Iran’s Documentary Channel, focused in one of its episodes on a technological mining project and showcased Iranian researchers’ efforts to localize heavy-duty mining tire recycling technology.
This technology was developed through cooperation between the Mining Research Institute of Isfahan University of Technology and IMPASCO, leveraging the company’s research capabilities through a research contract, the university’s scientific and technical expertise, and the real needs of the mining industry.
The project aims to provide a domestic solution for managing and recycling massive tires used in mining machinery. Oversight of the research process and the construction of a semi-industrial recycling plant were carried out by the Research Management Department of IMPASCO.
Heavy-duty mining machinery tires, due to their extremely large size, weight and demanding operating conditions, pose significant challenges for disposal after reaching the end of their service life. The accumulation of these tires not only occupies considerable space but can also become an environmental concern in mining regions. Therefore, achieving recycling technology and utilizing the potential of these waste materials represents an important step toward sustainable mining waste management.
The documentary “Thinking of the Peak” highlights this project as an example of transforming an environmental challenge into a technological opportunity — a process in which collaboration between universities and industry can lead to the development of knowledge and technologies tailored to the country’s actual needs.
The localization of this technology also demonstrates IMPASCO’s capacity to support innovative solutions and move toward responsible mining practices. This approach focuses on protecting the environment while improving productivity and expanding mining activities sustainably.
The broadcast of this episode provides audiences with insight into a less visible aspect of environmental challenges in the mining sector and the efforts of Iranian specialists to address them. It highlights that the future of mining is not only shaped deep underground, but also in laboratories, research centers and through the connection between science and industry.
