Eight Miners Killed and Injured in Turkey’s Zonguldak Province

Three workers lost their lives and five others were injured following a methane gas explosion at a private coal mine in Turkey's Zonguldak Province.

The explosion occurred at a private coal mine in Zonguldak Province on the Black Sea coast.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

Osman Hacıbektaşoğlu, the Governor of Zonguldak, told reporters that two of the injured workers are in critical condition and will be transferred to Ankara, Turkey’s capital, for treatment.

The governor had earlier announced that the explosion resulted in two deaths and that rescue teams were trying to reach another person trapped inside the mine. However, TRT network reported that the third worker also lost his life in the explosion.

Accidents in Turkish mines are not uncommon. The independent monitoring group, the Workers’ Health and Safety Assembly (ISIG), has reported that between 2013 and 2025, 1,267 miners lost their lives in workplace accidents, with most of these cases caused by mine collapses and suffocation.
